InterDigital goes up for sale
InterDigital said it's considering "strategic alternatives" for the company, which may include a sale. The recent sale of Nortel's patent portfolio for USD 4.5 billion, or five times the starting bid price, has pushed Interdigital's share price higher, as investors realise the potential value of its portfolio of mobile and wireless patents. Interdigital chairman Terry Clontz noted the rise in value of intellectual property, saying "major players in the mobile industry increasingly understand the strategic and economic value of this type of asset". As a result, the company "believes it is an appropriate time to explore potential strategic options that may enhance shareholder value". Interdigital retained Evercore Partners and Barclays Capital as its financial advisors to assist with the strategic review process. Started as a developer of TDMA and then CDMA technologies, InterDigital now licenses a variety of mobile technologies including many components of HSPA, and works on wireless development with companies such as Nokia and Infineon.
