
Reliance Industries has announced the JioPhone Next smartphone, developed in partnership with Google. It's powered by an Android-based operating system dubbed ‘Pragati’ and loaded with languages and features designed for Indian smartphone users. Pricing starts at INR 1,999 upfront with a Jio financing plan, or INR 6,499 (EUR 75) in cash.
The device missed its initially set launch date for 10 September due to global chip shortages, the Business Standard reported earlier. Jio kicked off orders on 01 November and hopes to have the phone in shops by the Diwali holiday on 04 November.
The Pragati operating system that has been built specifically for India. Features include read-aloud and language translation for any on-screen text, an advanced camera with HDR and low-light modes plus India-centric Snapchat Lenses, voice-driven navigation to help people find and consume content in their language of choice, and dual SIM support. The device runs a Qualcomm processor and comes with support for the Play Store and apps as well as regular security and feature updates.
Google agreed in July 2020 to work with Jio on developing affordable smartphones. The company also acquired a minority stake in the Indian operator.
