Maroc Telecom fined MAD 3.3 bln for restricting competition on fixed market

Morocco’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency has fined Maroc Telecom MAD 3.3 billion (EUR 311 million) for anti-competitive practices. This follows a complaint from rival Wana (Inwi) over the incumbent's failure to comply with regulations on local loop unbundling. 

The ANRT opened an investigation in May 2017. It found Maroc Telecom had been blocking access to unbundling on its network and the fixed market since at least 2013. This was found to be an abuse of its dominant position, in violation of competition law. 

Maroc Telecom may face further daily fines if it does not comply with injunctions from the regulator aimed at improving competition on the broadband and fixed voice markets.

Maroc Telecom Group's consolidated revenue increased by 4 percent to MAD 9.31 billion for the first quarter to 31 March from MAD 8.95 billion in Q1 2019, thanks to a 6.9 percent rise in the group's international revenue. EBIDTA was MAD 4.79 billion, up 3.1 percent from MAD 4.65 billion, driven by the increase in revenue. The EBITDA margin was 51.5 percent.

Regulator diverts Maroc Telecom fine to Covid-19 fund

Maroc Telecom's MAD 3.3 billion fine issued by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ANRT), has been directed into a fund set up by the government to combat coronavirus, ITWeb reported. The newly established fund will cover the costs of upgrading the medical sector by providing suitable infrastructure and additional means urgently to treat people who are infected with the virus. The fund will also support the national economy to cope with the impact of the pandemic.

Morocco's mobile internet connections rise 11% to 23.7 mln in 2019

The year-on-year growth rate in Morocco's mobile internet connections accelerated to 11.2 percent in 2019 from 2.2 percent in 2018. The country recorded 2.4 million net additions across the year, to reach a mobile internet base of 23.7 million at end-December, representing 93 percent of the overall internet market. Including fixed broadband and other access networks, Morocco closed 2019 with 25.4 million internet subscriptions and an internet penetration rate of 71.3 percent, up from 64.7 percent in 2018.

Inwi drops lawsuit against Maroc Telecom

Moroccan operator Inwi's board decided to end the legal battle initiated in March 2018 against the incumbent operator Maroc Telecom for unfair competition, reports Ecofin. The move follows the invitation of its majority shareholder, the royal holding company Al Mada. Inwi's decision comes shortly after the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ANRT) fined Maroc Telecom MAD 3.3 billion.
