Mexican watchdog to investigate Telmex for monopolistic practices
Mexico’s telecommunications regulator IFT has launched an investigation into possible monopolistic practices in the wholesale services market of the local network of America Movil's Telmex unit. The probe will investigate “the probably commission of relative monopolistic practices that have or may have as their object or effect to unduly displace other economic actors, substantially impede their access, or to establish exclusive advantages in favour of one or more economic agents in the relevant market, or in a related market," said the IFT in the country’s official gazette.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint, said the IFT, adding that the probe will last at least 30 working days and no more than 120 working days, although it didn’t rule out possible extensions. Telmex has been subject to stricter regulation since it was declared a "dominant agent" in the telecommunications sector back in 2014.

In 2017 the IFT ordered America Movil to create a new company to manage the infrastructure of Telmex with a view to offering equality of access to its rivals.
