Mexico's Telcel and Movistar sign national roaming deal
Mexican mobile operator Telcel (America Movil) has announced a national roaming agreement with Movistar (Telefonica). In a brief statement, Telcel said it would let Movistar users access its network in areas not currently reached by the latter’s mobile coverage, presumably allowing the Telefonica-owned operator to expand its 4G services throughout Mexico. 

The announcement comes after the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) declared Telcel a dominant player in the mobile sector in March 2014, leading to stricter rules including the elimination of national roaming charges with a view to introducing greater competition in the local telecommunications market.

Telefonica Mexico reported positive organic revenue growth for the third consecutive quarter in the October to December period, with sales up 0.3 percent to EUR 334 million, albeit a significant slowdown compared to the 4.5 percent rise reported in Q3. The company attributed the consolidation of its return to growth to an improvement in its commercial offering and distribution channels, coupled with better network coverage and quality in Mexico's main cities and a national roaming agreement.

Telcel, AT&T Mexico reach national roaming deal

Market leading Mexican mobile operator Telcel (America Movil) has announced a national roaming agreement with AT&T Mexico. In a brief statement, Telcel confirmed it had reached a deal to provide AT&T users with national roaming access in Mexico, simply adding that the terms and conditions of the agreement meet the dominant operator's national roaming reference offer set by telecom regulator IFT. Rival operator Movistar (Telefonica) signed a similar national roaming agreement with Telcel at the end of 2016.

All Mexican postpay plans now include US roaming - IFT

All Mexican postpay plans and 42 percent of prepay plans now include free voice and data roaming in the US and Canada, according to a report from the country's communications watchdog IFT. The analysis of 49 Mexican postpay plans revealed that 82 percent come with unlimited voice minutes and SMS while the amount of roaming data offered ranges from 1GB to 16.4GB. However, only 42 percent of the 14 prepay plans analysed offer the possibility of free roaming, said the IFT.

Telcel tops Mexico 4G ranking in speed, AT&T in coverage

Telcel, the mobile unit of America Movil, has topped Mexico's 4G speed ranking in the latest mobile network report published by OpenSignal. IFT shelves Telcel advertising case against Televisa

Mexican telecom regulator IFT announced that it finally decided to shelve the complaint brought by America Movil's Telcel unit against media group Televisa back in 2011 for refusing to sell it free to air advertising space during the transmission of the Pan American Games. Telcel, Movistar national roaming agreement enters into force

Movistar Mexico (Telefonica) has confirmed that the national roaming agreement signed with Telcel (America Movil) entered into force on 07 December. America Movil reported total third-quarter revenues for domestic market of Mexico down 2.4 percent from a year earlier to MXN 66.5 billion, with service revenues declining 10.2 percent to MXN 49.7 billion.
