NGMN calls for WRC action on 5G spectrum
The NGMN alliance of mobile operators has called for the upcoming ITU World Radiocommunication Conference to take the first steps towards reserving spectrum for 5G mobile networks. The WRC-15 can take a decision to place 5G on the agenda for its next conference in 2019, ahead of the planned roll-out of 5G from 2020.

The NGMN said it supports the ITU starting studies on a range of potential bands, with a view to designating frequency bands for 5G. It noted in particular to consider wider bands than the standard 20 MHz used for 4G, in order to achieve the aims of very fast, short-range connections under 5G. Spectrum designations should also ensure support for multiple networks and operators in each country, it added.

The operators' alliance said studies should focus on a specific set of frequency bands drawn from the entire range of approximately 6GHz to 100GHz. Specifically, it supports looking at the 6-20 GHz range, as well as 20-30 GHz and 30-86 GHz. Aside from the new spectrum requirements above 6GHz, low spectrum (below 6GHz) is "absolutely essential" as well for 5G, as for other mobile standards, in order to ensure "economical" delivery of mobile services, the NGMN said in a statement.

The group published the white paper “Future IMT spectrum goals for ITU WRC-15” to outline further the issues at stake.
