Niantic raises USD 300 mln from Coatue to grow AR gaming

AR games developer Niantic announced that tech investor Coatue has made a USD 300 million investment in the company, valuing Niantic at USD 9 billion in total. Niantic will use the funds to invest in current games and new apps, expand its Lightship developer platform, and "build out its vision for the Real-World Metaverse".

Niantic launched the Lightship platform earlier this month to open up its augmented reality platform tools to other developers. The Lightship Platform is the foundation for Niantic’s own products, such as Ingress Prime and Pokemon Go. Niantic also announced Niantic Ventures, a USD 20 million fund to help identify and fund promising AR companies.
