Nokia CTO Weldon to leave in March 2021

Marcus Weldon has confirmed on Twitter that he is stepping down as CTO of Nokia, after 11 years in the position and 25 years with the company. Weldon said it was "time to seek pastures new and hand the reins over with a peaceful transfer of power".

The tweet follows a report from TelecomTV that Weldon will leave in March 2021. He is also the president of Nokia Bell Labs, the company's main research arm. 

Nokia confirmed the decision and said Weldon would help establish the new Strategy and Technology organization before his departure. This unit was announced in October as part of the operating model planned by the new CEO Pekka Lundmark. 

Since the reorganisation was unveiled, Nokia has also announced the departure of its CMO.

Nokia reported fourth-quarter sales down 5 percent year-on-year to EUR 6.6 billion, hurt by continued weakness in its Mobile Access business. The company's net result was a loss of EUR 0.46 per share, versus a profit of EUR 0.10 a year ago, due to a EUR 2.9 billion reversal of deferred tax assets in Finland. Nokia reported adjusted profits for the full year at the high end of its reduced outlook issued in October, while warning that 2021 would be a "year of transition" as it works on improving its position

Nokia appoints Batra as new chief strategy and technology officer

Nokia has appointed a new chief strategy and technology officer from 18 January. Nishant Batra joins Nokia from automotive tech specialist Veoneer in Sweden, where he was the CTO. Before that, he worked for 12 years at Ericsson. In his new position, he will be based initially in Espoo, Finland, after which he will move to the US.

Nokia is providing a mid-term update on its strategy. At a meeting with analysts the company will discuss the strategy for its four new divisions first announced in later October. More detailed targets will be presented at another analyst meeting 18 March.

Nokia to lose president of global services Goel

Nokia's Sanjay Goel, president of the company's global services, will be leaving the firm as it prepares for its new, streamlined, organisational structure, a spokesperson told Reuters. The company said the departure is linked to the new operating model that will get implemented from next year. The plan was unveiled at the end of October, alongside disappointing third quarter results and a downgrade in the company's outlook for this year.

Nokia CMO to depart company from January

Nokia has announced the departure of Barry French, its CMO since 2014, at the end of the year. The new was given on LinkedIn, with French saying it was "time to think about what comes next." CEO Pekka Lundmark thanked French for the support given to him when he first arrived at the company, "particularly given that I know he has been considering a change."

Nokia Bell Labs Prize goes to Berkeley team for new quantum computing processor

Nokia said this year's Nokia Bell Labs Prize has been awarded to a student and professor team from the University of California at Berkeley. PhD student Tianshi Wang and Professor Jaijeet Roychowdhury received USD 100,000 for winning the competition, and the opportunity to pursue an expanded collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs. The 2019 competition attracted more than 250 applications from 31 countries.
