Nokia Networks announced that it will start trialling a 5G hotspot system next year to bring 1 Gbps ‘last-hop’ connections to homes with no fibre service. Commercial availability is expected in 2017. The equipment could be installed on adjacent lamp posts, for example, with 5G-ready 10 Gbps sites providing 1 Gbps to several homes. Nokia Networks' recently revealed programmable 5G multi-service architecture provides a view on what type of network architecture is needed for future use by consumers and M2M for IoT.
In April, 2015, at the Brooklyn Summit, Nokia Networks and National Instruments demonstrated 10 Gbps speeds over the air with massive MIMO and beamsteering technologies, paving the way for meeting 5G requirements.
