Project Loon gets new chief

Tom Moore, the head of Project Loon, has stepped down after six months, Bloomberg reported. He will be succeeded by Alastair Westgarth, the CEO of Quintel, a mobile antenna specialist. Moore will stay on as advisor for the next few months.

The transition comes after the company scaled back its plans to provide broadband to underserved areas around the globe with high-altitude balloons. X, the research division of Google parent Alphabet, recruited Moore in August after the unit's earlier leader, Mike Cassidy, stepped down. Westgarth has experience building early-stage startups into commercial businesses, and has held executive positions at Airspan Networks, InnerWireless, Navini Networks and Tango Networks.
