
A 1-month consultation period has now been opened on the proposal to tax all “interpersonal communications providers", including those that do not require a numbering service, that turn over more than EUR 1 million a year. The draft said the tax levied will not be allowed to exceed one euro per every thousand euros of gross revenue.
Spain is among the European countries backing more stringent tax regimes for big internet companies. “The way we consume communications services has changed, and competitive conditions have changed as a result,” said Spain’s Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Roberto Sanchez following the publication of the draft, according to Reuters.
Earlier this year, Spanish communications watchdog CNMC required Microsoft to add Skype Out to Spain’s Registry of Operators and proposed to fine Microsoft Ireland for “failing to communicate the provision of electronic communications services to the general public”
