Spotify, Hulu partner on USD 5 streaming bundle for students

Spotify and Hulu are bundling their streaming music and TV services to offer a new low-cost bundle for USD 4.99 per month to US college students. The companies said they plan to launch similar offers for the broader market in future. 

The student plan offers access to the ad-free Spotify Premium service and Hulu’s Limited Commercials plan, through the brands’ respective apps. Spotify already offered the student plan for USD 4.99 per month, making Hulu essentially free with the offer. 

This is Spotify's first partnership with a TV/video provider. The offer gives subscribers on-demand access to a wide range of new and old TV series from Hulu, which is backed by major broadcasters in the US. 

The offer is available to students at recognised universities in the US. Customers can subscribe through Spotify or Hulu for the offer.

The new plan open to anyone costs USD 12.99 per month, compared to a standard price for the separate services of USD 9.99 and USD 7.99.

Subscriptions will cost less than USD 20 a month.

Spotify parts ways with video chief Calderone

Music streaming company Spotify has confirmed to Bloomberg that it's parting ways with its head of original video and podcasts Tom Calderone a little more than a year after he was appointed. Calderone, the former head of cable network VH1, commissioned a dozen series and signed deals with producers including ESPN and Vice. Spotify has reached a global licensing agreement with Warner Music, paving the way for its forthcoming US stock market listing. Spotify reaches 60 mln paid subscribers

Spotify has reached 60 million paid users, the company announced on its website. That's up from 50 million reported in March. In total, the streaming music service counts over 140 million users, including its ad-supported free service. The service is available in 60 markets and counts over 30 million songs available to users.

Spotify said it has reached 140 million monthly active users. The figure amounted to 100 million users (paid and free)in June 2016. No separate information was given about the number of paying users. The figure hit 50 million in March.
