Telefonica announced an agreement with Huawei to build a large-scale virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) network in Latin America and Europe with a view to meeting ever-increasing traffic demand. The technology will be based on Huawei’s CloudEPC platform and will allow Telefonica to provide converged voice and data on 4G networks in eleven countries in Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala), plus Germany and Spain in Europe.
The partners jointly tested CloudEPC performance at Telefonica’s NFV (Network Function Virtualisation) Reference Lab in Madrid and are currently trialling the technology’s integration with the operator’s cloud-based Unica virtualisation platform. Evolved Packet Core technology serves diverse use cases, including traditional customer-centric services, IoT/M2M, MVNO, private LTE and Mobile-Edge Computing, added Telefonica.
