Telefonica sells four more data centres to Asterion in exchange for shares

Telefonica said it has agreed to sell four more data centres to Spanish infrastructure fund Asterion in exchange for shares in the latter's Nabiax subsidiary. Under the deal, Telefonica will divest two data centres located in Spain and two in Chile for a 20 percent stake in Nabiax, a colocation and housing services provider set up in 2019 to manage the eleven data centres acquired by Asterion in 2019. The aim is to establish an important strategic partnership with Asterion and its co-investors in Nabiax, who retain the remaining 80 percent of the share capital, said Telefonica.

The transaction includes an agreement for housing services in the four data centres for an initial term of ten years and does not include the sale of servers owned by Telefonica or the management and access to customers hosted on them. Telefonica confirmed that it will continue to provide and manage the services that it has been offering to its customers from the data centres and maintain its direct relationship with them.

The Spanish operator added that the stake in Nabiax held by its Telefonica Infra unit will allow it to retain exposure to a global data centre platform with attractive growth prospects. It will also continue to work with Nabiax to develop commercial cooperation and joint business opportunities such as new services, edge computing and data centre automation.

The deal comes after Asterion bought 11 data centres from Telefonica in Argentina (2), Brazil (2), Chile (1), Spain (2), Mexico (1), Peru (2) and the US (1) for a total of EUR 550 million back in 2019, subsequently creating Nabiax to manage the assets.
