Telefonica to roll out new Aura-powered 4K decoder

Telefonica is planning to replace the existing set-top boxes used by subscribers to its Movistar+ pay-TV service with new 4K-UHD decoders offering access to the company’s digital assistant Aura, reports Cinco Dias, citing network director Joaquin Mata. The new 4K-UHD unit will be rolled out in October, with the operator looking to renew its entire STB footprint within 18-24 months. Mata added that Telefonica plans to have renewed 1 million of its decoders by the middle of next year and will also be launching a new voice-controlled remote control with Bluetooth in 2019.

Last month Telefonica announced that the Aura app – which allows clients to search and request content as well as change channels and consult billing using voice commands –has attracted 470,000 users since its launch in February. The company also revealed that it will be officially debuting its 4K offer this month with live La Liga football games on the Movistar Partidazo 4K and beIN La Liga 4K channels as well as a 4K stream of games from La Liga Santander, La Liga 123, the Copa del Rey, Champions League, Europa League, Premier League and Bundesliga.
