Telenor Norway said that by the New Year, more than 100,000 of its customers will have wireless broadband, as it prepares to wind down its copper network over the course of the next year. The operator started dismantling its copper network at the beginning of 2019.
CEO Petter-Borre Furberg of Telenor Norway said that 10 percent of copper customers suffer faults on their landlines or fixed internet every year, but now that the operator has moved a lot of customers, it is already noticing fewer problems.
The peak year for the copper network was in 1996 with 2.4 million subscribers on landline telephony, but this has fallen below 91,000 fixed phone customers, with 83,000 subscribers on landline internet. Furberg said Telenor is investing NOK 6 billion this year in mobile and fibre connections to ensure copper substitution.
