Telstra partners with Fon to develop Wi-Fi network
Australian operator Telstra is the latest to partner with Fon to expand its customers' access to Wi-Fi. From early 2015, Telstra home broadband customers with a compatible modem will be able to join the Fon Wi-Fi community. In exchange for securely sharing a portion of their bandwidth with other Telstra Wi-Fi customers, they will be able to use their home broadband allowance via the Telstra Wi-Fi hotspot network, as well as gain access to more than 12 million Fon hotspots around the world.

Telstra said the Wi-Fi network will add to its 4G coverage, giving customers more options to connect. It will eventually extend Fon access to mobile-only customers as well. It plans a total investment of some AUD 100 million in the Wi-Fi strategy, including building more than 8,000 hotspots in public places such as shopping strips, business centres and transport hubs and helping small businesses and local government bodies offer Wi-Fi access. It targets 2 million hotspots within five years of the Fon partnership.
