True not to bid for 900MHz spectrum licence

Thai mobile operator True has announced it will not participate in the re-auction of 900MHz spectrum to be held by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission on 27 May. True Group said it already has a very comprehensive spectrum portfolio with sufficiently large bandwidth totaling 55 MHz and an ideal combination of low-band and high-band frequencies for its coverage and capacity needs. This enables the company to address all market segments and ecosystems with its 4G, 3G and 2G networks nationwide.

True's decision leaves Advanced Info Service (AIS) as the only bidder in the 27 May tender, as Total Access Communication (Dtac) earlier also said it would not join the 900MHz spectrum re-auction.

In the tender scheduled for 27 May, Thai telecoms regulator will re-auction 900MHz band frequencies, after Jasmine International, winner of the December 2015 auction, failed to make the first payment for the licence and forfeited it in March.

Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) plans to auction 11 wireless telecommunication spectrum licences in the next five years, The Nation reports, citing NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith. The statement was made during a meeting of the Asean Telecommunications Regulators' Council (ARTC) in Phuket on 2 August. According to Tantasith, the NBTC's 2016/20 plan includes licence auctions for 2.6 GHz, 1,800 MHz, 850 MHz and 700MHz spectrum.

TOT to launch 2.3GHz broadband trial on 4 August - report

Thai state-owned operator TOT plans to launch an official non-commercial trial to provide a 2.3GHz wireless broadband service on 4 August. The trial will cover Bangkok and Ratchaburi, The Nation reports, citing an unnamed TOT executive. TOT is currently waiting to receive the permit from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission to use network equipment for the trial service.

Dtac increases 4G bandwidth on 1800 MHz to 20 MHz

Thai mobile operator Total Access Communication (Dtac) has announced it has increased the bandwidth of Super 4G on 1800 MHz to 20 MHz. Dtac's Super 4G network currently covers Bangkok and its vicinity and supports all 4G-enabled smartphones in the market. Dtac 4G subscribers currently average 3.5 GB of data usage per month, and the subscriber base is expected to reach 6 million by end-2016.

AIS wins 900 MHz spectrum auction with minimum bid

Advanced Info Service (AIS) has won the re-auction of the 900-MHz licence in Thailand, for the reserve price of THB 75.654 billion. There were no other bidders, the Bangkok Post reports. The 10 MHz block was offered again for sale by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission after the previous winning bidder, Jas Mobile Broadband, was unable to raise financing for the licence. AIS commercially launches 4.5G services

Thai operator AIS has commercially launched its 4.5G network, providing maximum speeds of 1 Gbps. The 4.5G network was first launched in Thailand in late March, in partnership with Huawei. The two companies' Joint Innovation Center (JIC) has since then developed the network in response to growing demand for higher-speed internet connections. The AIS 4.5G network is available immediately for commercial service to customers in Thailand with compatible devices.

Thailand's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has officially ordered the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to hold a new 900 MHz spectrum auction on 27 May, The Nation reports. The NBTC will auction a licence in the 900 MHz spectrum recently forfeited by Jas Mobile Broadband.

True Move H Universal Communication Company (TUC), a subsidiary of True Corporation, has announced that TUC has completely fulfilled the conditions precedent within 90 days from the date of being notified by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) as being the winning bidder in the 900 MHz spectrum tender.
