UK opens up 6 GHz spectrum for home Wi-Fi services

UK regulator Ofcom has announced changes to free up more spectrum for wireless Wi-Fi services, following a consultation earlier in 2020. 

Ofcom will make airwaves in the lower 6 GHz band available for Wi-Fi services without the need for a licence. This is designed to support new services such as VR headsets and smart glasses, which use Wi-Fi to connect to other devices. Ofcom is also updating technical requirements for Wi-Fi routers to ease congestion in wireless networks.

EU to allocate 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi from Q2 2021

The German Federal Network Agency, Bundesnetzagentur, said it plans to allocate the 6 GHz band for WLAN in Q2 2021. This follows approval by a key EU technical committee for expanded use of the band already adopted in the US and other countries. The extra 480 MHz spectrum is expected to provide more capacity for Wi-Fi applications, support innovative use cases and enable new services for consumers and industry.

Ofcom opens up access to EHF spectrum in 100-200 GHz range

UK regulator Ofcom has confirmed plans to open up access to 18.2 GHz of Extremely High Frequency (EHF) spectrum in the 100-200 GHz range. Organisations and people can apply for a new licence granting access to one of the 116-122, 174.8-182 and 195-190 GHz bands.

UK regulator Ofcom is consulting on new proposals to regulate wholesale markets for landline and mobile phone calls, which would apply for the period from April 2021 to March 2026. The consultation closes on 08 October.

The National Association of Broadcasters in the US has filed an appeal against the FCC's decision to open up the 6 GHz band to Wi-Fi devices. They claim the decision will harm the news-gathering abilities of local broadcasters, Multichannel reports.

Brazil opens way for Wi-Fi in 6 GHz band

Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has opened up the possibility of using the radio frequency bands from 5.925 GHz to 7.125 GHz for Wi-Fi, reports Teletime.com.br. This follows approval of the amended radio equipment regulation in the past week. The regulator said it will specify in the next 90 days the conditions for use of the band, including issues such as coexistence with other services in the same band, access priority, power limits, among others.

The Federal Communications Commission has approved its proposal to open up the 6 GHz band for unlicensed use, creating a new range of 1,200 MHz (5.925–7.125 GHz) for Wi-Fi services. This increases the amount of spectrum available for Wi-Fi by nearly a factor of five.
