WhatsApp sets new traffic record on New Year's Eve
Mobile messaging service WhatsApp announced a new daily traffic record for New Year's eve. On 31 December, the app processed 7 billion inbound messages and 11 billion outbound messages, for a total 18 billion. WhatsApp announced the record on its Twitter account.

Facebook is adding VoIP to the Facebook Messenger for mobile phones. The service is available initially in Canada, as a test for iPhone users. The service works both over Wi-Fi as well as 3G and 4G networks. In addition, it's added voicemail worldwide to the service, both for iOS and Android users.

People in Serbia exchanged nearly 30 million SMS greetings via the mobile network of Telekom Srbija (mt:s) on New Year's Eve and 14.14 million SMS and MMS messages through the Vip Mobile network. T-Mobile Czech Republic New Year's Eve traffic up 19 percent

T-Mobile Czech Republic recorded an increase in New Year's Eve traffic of 19 percent. There was an increase in calls of more than 13 percent to approximately 24 million. On the last day of 2012, SMS were a less popular way of communication and the number was stable with the 2011 level at more than 15 million. The MMS centre processed fewer than 205,000 MMS, which 2 percent more than in 2011. There was a significant increase in the volume of data transferred of 112 percent.

French consumers sent nearly 345 million SMS and MMS between 21:00 and 2:00 on New Year's Eve. Operator figures show that Orange reported 116 mln SMS and 4.28 million MMS, SFR 121 million and 3 million, Bouygues Telecom 67 million and 1.84 million, and Free Mobile 32 million SMS. WhatsApp denies reported Facebook acquisition talks

Mobile messaging service WhatsApp has denied a report it's in talks for a takeover by Facebook. TechCrunch reported earlier that Facebook was planning to acquire the company, without naming its sources or providing further details. Operators to lose USD 54 bln by 2016 over free message apps

By 2016 operators will have lost USD 54 billion in SMS revenues due to the increasing popularity of social messaging services on smartphones, more than double the USD 23 billion they are expected to have lost by the end of 2012, according to a study by Ovum.
