Apple grows to 30 mln paid subscribers

Apple Music has reached 30 million paying subscribers, according to Jimmy Iovine, the founder of Beats and head of the Apple music services. He was speaking in an interview with the magazine Billboard.

The Apple Music service has grown from a reported 27 million paying subscribers in June and 20 million in December 2016. It is still only around half the size of Spotify, which counted 60 million paid subscribers in early August.

Iovine said Apple Music is looking to grow through making more exclusive content, especially films and videos. This can help artists tell the story of their music. Free music services, such as Spotify's ad-supported service, can make it difficult to convince consumers to spend USD 10 on a service that offers more content and no ads, he said.
