Disney launches Star+ streaming service in Latin America

Disney’s Star+ streaming service has officially launched in Latin America two months later than originally planned. In an interview with Argentinian daily La Nacion, Disney’s regional president Diego Lerner said Latin America is the only region in the world in which the platform is being made available as a standalone service as well as in combination with Disney+. 

He revealed that In Argentina, Star+ will cost ARS 880 (around USD 9) a month or ARS 8,800 (USD 90) a year. Alternatively, a ‘Combo+’ subscription to both Star+ and Disney+ will be priced at ARS 995 (USD 10) a month. Earlier this year, Disney said Star+ will include 66 new original productions created in and for Latin America at launch. More than 1,300 titles are currently available on the platform, rising to 2,000 by the end of the year.

It also includes a full slate of ESPN content, including live events from competitions such as NFL American football and NBA basketball, soccer matches from the Copa Conmebol Libertadores, the UEFA Champions League, Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A and the English Premier League as well as Grand Slam, ATP and WTA tennis, MotoGP and PGA Tour golf.

Disney said it will offer a 3-day pass for new subscribers to its video streaming service Star+ this weekend as part of a strategy to boost access to the platform. Under the promo, anyone resident in Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Brazil signing up from 10 to 12 December will not be charged for the service, allowing them to view the deciding F1 Grand Prix from Abu Dhabi, Sunday night American football games and the Ligue 1 game PSG and Monaco, among other content.

Latin American broadcaster Sky Mexico (AT&T) has reached an agreement with La Liga to continue airing games from Spain's top-tier football league in Mexico and Central America from from 2024-25 until the end of the 2031-32 season. According to a report in El Confidencial, the 8-year deal is worth around EUR 60 million a year, double its current value.

Latin American e-commerce giant MercadoLibre has begun giving its premium users in Mexico free access to the Combo pack with Disney+ and the newly-launched Star+ video streaming service, reports website Xataka Mexico. Under the offer, members of MercadoLibre's loyalty programme will be able to view the full Star+ and Disney+ catalogue for free instead of MXN 249 a month as long as they maintain MercadoPuntos level 6 via website acquisitions and MercadoPago payments.

Under the deal, any subscribers to the Telmex Infinitum broadband packages who already have a Disney+ account will be given free access to Star+ for 6 months. In addition, Infinitum customers can sign up to the Combo pack with Disney+ and Star+ for MXN 129 a month instead of the usual price of MXN 249 for the first 4 months.
