Facebook is considering launching an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, The Information reports citing two people familiar with the matter. The suit would allege that Apple abuses its dominant position in the smartphone market by forcing app developers to adhere to policies on its App Store that Apple does not meet for its own services.
Facebook has not taken a final decision yet on whether to go ahead with the legal case, the report said. The company has been criticising Apple in public already, not only for its App Store policies but also for upcoming changes to iOS that are expected to harm ad-supported publishers.
Apple's App Store policies are already under investigation in the EU, Australia and Russia, among other markets, amid concerns it favours its apps and services over other providers using its platform. The criticism over arbitrary fees and mandatory payment terms prompted the company to last year announce a reduced commission for smaller app developers. However, the loudest complaints have come mostly from large providers, some of whom rival Apple in certain markets, like Spotify, Netflix and Epic Games.
