Epic Games files competition complaint against Apple in Europe

Epic Games is taking its fight against Apple's App Store policies to the EU. The company said it filed an antitrust complaint against Apple with the European Commission's competition department, alleging that Apple has "not just harmed but completely eliminated competition" in app distribution and payment processes. Apple is accused of abusing the dominant position of its iOS platform to favour its own apps and services over competitors.

Epic Games earlier sued Apple in the US after its popular game Fortnite was pulled from the App Store for violating Apple's policies. In addition, the company has legal processes underway in Australia and it filed a complaint before the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal last month.

Epic disputes the arbitrary commission Apple imposes on all apps distributed over its App Store, as well as being forced to use Apple's platform in order to reach iOS users.

The European Commission is already investigating Apple's App Store policies in a separate case started last year. That's looking in particular at the impact on competition in digital music, mobile payment and e-book services. Australia's competition regulator is also expected to come out soon with a report on competition among app stores
