Facebook is planning to change its company name to reflect its focus on building the metaverse, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told The Verge. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to discuss the plans at the company’s annual Connect conference on 28 October, and the company could unveil the name sooner, the report said.
The change is meant to signal the company’s ambition "to be known for more than social media and all the ills that entail", the Verge report said. Facebook would be just one brand among several owned by the larger group, and the intense scrutiny faced by the social network could be separated from the company's other projects, such as virtual realty devices and apps.
A spokesperson for Facebook declined to comment.
