Fastweb has announced an agreement with wholesale-only operator Open Fiber to use the latter’s FTTH networks in areas not covered by its own infrastructure. Under the terms of the deal Fastweb will be able to access Open Fiber’s network in the 80 major Italian cities it doesn’t yet reach, as well as in so-called 'white' digital divide areas throughout the country. Open Fiber, meanwhile, will be able to tap into Fastweb’s own fibre infrastructure where needed to continue rolling out its own wholesale network.
In a statement, Fastweb CEO described the deal as an important step in the company’s strategy to offer customers the best connectivity, complementing its existing FTTC, FTTH and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) infrastructure.
Open Fiber has already reached FTTH access deals with Sky, Wind Tre, Vodafone and Retelit, among others, and has reportedly signed a non-disclosure agreement with Telecom Italia (TIM) about the possibility of merging their respective fixed network assets.
