IBM president Whitehurst announces departure

IBM has announced the departure of president Jim Whitehurst, who joined the company when it bought Red Hat in late 2018. Whitehurst will continue on as senior advisory, as IBM continues to evolve its business and strategy. Whitehurst was number two at IBM, and seen as a potential CEO, the Wall Street Journal noted. No new president has been named.

IBM announced a few more executive changes however. Bridget van Kralingen will also be leaving the company. Van Kralingen had agreed to stay with IBM during the transition of new CEO Arvind Krishna. She will remain senior VP of special projects for a year, and then retire from IBM.

Meanwhile, IBM veteran Rob Thomas will become senior VP for Global Markets and Tom Rosamilia has been named senior VP for Cloud and Cognitive Software. Rosamila was before GM of WebSphere, among other executive roles. Ric Lewis is the new senior VP for Systems, after holding diverse roles, including for HPE’s hybrid IT business. Keely Chambliss was promoted the new senior VP for Americas and Strategic Sales for the company’s Global Business Services. Finally, Roger Premo will lead a newly formed business development team.
