Ikea to start selling smart lighting products

Ikea said it plans to start selling lighting that is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and the Apple HomeKit application in summer and autumn. The plug and play system means there is no need for any new wiring or intervention by an electrician, although it does require a wireless LED lamp.

Among other things, this will enable speech-controlled lighting. The system works with a remote control or wireless application.

Ikea said it entered the smart home market in 2015 when it started selling wireless chargers for mobile phones. It sees great potential in the market it said.

Based on their conclusions, the two companies will develop smart products that integrate a "great sound experience" into home furnishings. Ikea and Sonos said they want to make it possible for more people to create the "right atmosphere" in their home using sound and design.

The Swedish company has several more smart products in the pipeline and wants to make sure these can communicate with devices from other brands. Ikea announced a partnership with Apple to help customers visualise home furnishings using augmented reality. Ikea customers with an iPhone will be able to use an app to help them see what Ikea products will look like in their own homes, before buying the products. Nordic street lighting provider Capelon has licensed Finnish company Wirepas Connectivity for smart streetlight and smart city applications. It said smart lighting saves energy and maintenance costs, improves light quality, and its infrastructure can extend the Internet of Things (IoT) to provide applications such as environmental sensing, advertising and indoor position location.

About 1 out of every 10 Dutch households had a smart thermostat in March, an increase of 3 percent from the year before, according to the latest Telecompaper Consumer Panel study. Prospects continue to look good for the coming year. IKEA introduces Bluetooth beacons at Graz branch

Home furnishings company IKEA is launching a trial introduction of Bluetooth beacons to trigger the delivery of messages directly to consumer smartphones while they shop at the branch in Graz. Twenty-eight devices have been installed at the store. The basis for the use of beacons is the IKEA Family app, which recognises that the customer is at the store, and sends messages at specified locations within the shop; for instance at the checkout, the app reminds the customer to use their membership card.

Ikea to introduce desks, tables with Qi wireless charging

The Wireless Power Consortium said home furnishings giant Ikea is adopting the Qi wireless charging standard for its bedside tables, lamps and desks. The furniture with built-in mobile charging will be available in Europe and North America this April, followed by a global roll-out. According to the WPC, more than 80 Qi-enabled smartphones are available on the market already. These include models such as the Sony Z3, LG G3 and Samsung's new Galaxy S6.
