Iliad has become the latest Italian operator to launch commercial 5G services, initially in covered parts of 27 cities throughout the territory with more to come next year. The subsidiary of France's Iliad, which switched on its 5G network last week, had 6.84 million subscribers at the end of September, equivalent to almost 9 percent of the Italian market. It acquired 5G-ready frequencies in the 700 MHz, 3.7 GHz and 26 GHz band for EUR 1.2 billion in Italy's 2018 spectrum auction.
Iliad is promoting the rollout with a sub-EUR 10 offer for new subscribers only. The ‘Flash 70’ tariff comes with 70GB of 5G data at maximum possible speeds plus unlimited calls and SMS for EUR 9.99 a month, just EUR 2 a month more than its 50GB 4G offer. It’s available until 21 January 2021 to customers activating a new number or porting their existing number from all of Italy’s operators.
SIM cards cost EUR 9.99 and can be acquired at the operator’s 18 own-brand stores and other outlets, including over 1,300 automatic ‘Simbox’ dispensing machines and Iliad Points. The launch cities for Iliad's 5G service are Alessandria, Bari, Bologna, Brescia, Cagliari, Como, Ferrara, Florence, Genoa, La Spezia, Latina, Messina, Milan, Modena, Padua, Perugia, Pesaro, Pescara, Piacenza, Prato, Ravenna, Reggio Calabria, Reggio Emilia, Rome, Turin, Verona and Vicenza.
