Intel CEO plans up to EUR 80 bln investment in new chip fabs in Europe

Intel has confirmed plans to build at least two new semiconductor factories in Europe. CEO Pat Gelsing outlined the plans in a keynote speech at the Munich auto show, saying the company could invest up to EUR 80 billion in Europe in the next decade.

Intel Foundry Services, the new wholesale arm announced in March, is "actively engaged in discussions" with potential customers in Europe, including automotive companies and their suppliers, Gelsing said. He outlined how the company can help the auto sector move to more advanced production processes for the next generation of vehicles. This will start with committed foundry capacity at its fab in Ireland and the launch of the Intel Foundry Services Accelerator to help automotive chip designers transition to advanced nodes.

Intel's self-driving subsidiary Mobileye also presented its first production autonomous vehicle system, equipped with the Level 4 Mobileye Drive self-driving system and bearing the MoovitAV branding. The system will be used in an autonomous ride-hailing service planned by Munich-based Sixt SE to start in 2022. Germany passed a law earlier this year making commercial AV services possible.
