Jolla says Sailfish gets Russian government approval

Finnish mobile company Jolla said that its Sailfish OS has been officially accepted as the only mobile operating system in Russia to be used in governmental and government-controlled corporations’ forthcoming mobile device projects. Jolla has also started discussions in China and South Africa about building local mobile OS ecosystems for the countries.

In 2015, the Russian Ministry of Communications publicly expressed support for the Sailfish OS agenda, as part of Russia’s long-term objective to create a more independent IT sector.

Sami Pienimaki, CEO of Jolla, said its open source coding and contribution models makes it possible to ramp up local systems effectively in six months. It has now done so in Russia with local partner Open Mobile Platform Ltd. Based on that experience, it looks forward to similar projects in other countries.

Pavel Eyges, CEO of Open Mobile Platform, said Sailfish has great potential in Russia and elsewhere. Sailfish OS is based on principles of participation and partnership, and Open Mobile Platform is actively recruiting partners and developer community members to take the initiative to new heights in Russia.

Jolla has signed an exclusive license agreement with the consortium, which aims to build a Sailfish OS based independent mobile operating system for China. The Sailfish consortium plans to invest USD 250 million in the Sailfish ecosystem development in China.

Bolivian tech company Jala Partners has announced a partnership with Jolla, the Finnish developer of open mobile operating system Sailfish, to power a new smartphone called Accione. Jala said it decided to use Jolla's Sailfish OS because of its openness and the fact that it allows full control over security features. The company added that its goal was to build an independent mobile ecosystem for Latin America. It also announced that the Accione phone will use chipset technology provided by Qualcomm.

Jolla C smartphone starts pre-sales in Russia

Finnish company Jolla has started pre-sales of its Jolla C Sailfish-OS powered smartphone in Russia. The dual-Sim device, including a 5-inch screen, 8 megapixel camera and 16 GB internal memory, can be ordered on the Buyon.ru online shop. A limited batch of the devices will be available for sale in Russia at this stage, and the price will total RUB 14,990.

Rostelecom to replace Oracle with Russian software

Russian national operator Rostelecom plans to optimise the architecture of the electronic government service in order to reduce its dependence on software of foreign origin, reports Vedomosti. The project value totals RUB 110.9 million. Under the framework of the project, the R&D company RT Labs, a subsidiary of the national operator Rostelecom, is expected to carry out a project on the switch of the electronic government system from Oracle to the Russian open-source PostgreSQL OS.

Intex launches Sailfish smartphone in India

Jolla, the Finnish developer of open mobile operating system Sailfish, has announced that its licensing partner Intex Technologies has started sales of its first licensed Sailfish OS device, the Intex Aqua Fish. The licensed Sailfish OS product is available in online channels in India. The Aqua Fish smartphone, developed in partnership with Jolla, is now available in India for INR 5,499.

Jolla, the Finnish developer of open mobile operating system Sailfish, announced the Sailfish Community Device Programme and said it sold out on the same day. The programme was for Sailfish developers and fans and included a new Sailfish OS smartphone called the Jolla C. Russian govt prepares ban on foreign telecom equipment

The Russian government plans to introduce a ban on the acquisition of imported servers and telecommunications equipment for state institutions and state-owned companies, reportd Cnews.ru. The draft document is expected to be prepared by 1 June. The ban will go into effect in cases where Russian equivalent equipment is available. Sailfish smartphone to launch in Russia this year

Sales of the Aqua Fish smartphone powered by the Sailfish OS designed by the Finnish company Jolla are planned to start in Russia by the end of the year, reports Comnews.ru. The producer of the smartphones is the India-based company Intex Technologies. Intex director Keshav Bansal said that the first phone will be available in India from April, at a price of around USD 120, and start shipping to Africa and Latin America in the summer. Russia should follow by the end of 2016.

Russia wants to raise taxes on foreign tech companies

Russia's new government internet advisor German Klimenko is pushing to raise taxes on US companies such as Google, Apple and Microsoft, in order to level the playhing field for Russian competitors such as Yandex and Mail.ru.
