Lenovo updates Moto G range, picks Alexa for Moto Z

Lenovo has updated its Moto G smartphone range with the G5 and G5 Plus unveiled at Mobile World Congress. The company said the range still offers "premium features for all", such as long-life batteries, a new metal body design and upgraded cameras.

Available in Lunar Gray or Fine Gold, the new smartphones will launch from March in Europe, the Americas and the Asia Pacific region. Running Android 7.0, they will have access to Google Assistant software. Lenovo announced separately that it's opted for Amazon Alexa instead for the more premium Moto Z smartphone series, with a supporting Moto Mod planned to launch later this year. The company said it aims to add Alexa integration to more of its phones in the coming year.

In the new range, the Moto G5 will come with a 2,800 mAh battery and 10W rapid charging, a 1.4 GHz octa-core processor, fingerprint reader and a 13-megapixel camera with phase detection autofocus.

The Moto G5 Plus comes with a more advanced 12-megapixel camera with dual Autofocus Pixels. This uses 10x more pixels on the sensor, for up to 60 percent faster focus than its predecessor. The large f/1.7 aperture also lets in more light. Other features on the 5.2-inch Plus model include a 3,000 mAh battery with TurboPower charging, a 2.0 GHz octa-core processor (Snapdragon 625) and support for faster LTE-Advanced. Also new is One Button Nav, which lets the user quickly navigate through screens using the fingerprint reader.

The Moto G5 starts at EUR 199 with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, and the Moto G5 Plus will sell from USD 229 with 2GB RAM/32GB storage and EUR 279 for 3GB RAM/32GB storage.
