LG to adopt plastic OLED for next flagship smartphone

LG Electronics announced that its next flagship smartphone will be the first to feature a plastic OLED FullVision display. The new V30 smartphone is expected to be unveiled at the Ifa consumer electronics show in Berlin at the start of September.

The company first introduced FullVision displays on the LG G6, its flagship launched earlier this year, and this type of display is also used on the new LG Q6. LG has not used a OLED on its smartphones since the LG G Flex 2 in 2015.

LG is already well-established in OLEDs for the TV market and recently said it plans to ramp up production of the plastic displays. In addition to their slim profile and excellent visuals, OLED displays are ideal for VR applications on smartphones, LG said. The plastic make-up also allows for curved edges to the screen.

The new phone will feature a six-inch OLED display, LG's largest display in four years, but thanks to the use of FullVision the actual body of the phone will be smaller than last year’s LG V20. The upper and lower bezels have been reduced by 20-50 percent compared to the V20, and the LG logo has been moved from the bottom of the display to the back of the phone to maximize viewable screen space.

The display's resolution will be QHD+ (1440 x 2880). LG noted that OLED technology also improves operational response time, which is "tens of times" faster than LCD. This eliminates afterimages, an important consideration for action movies and VR. The display will also support HDR10 and use Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
