Line to add low-cost VoIP calls to app from March
Mobile messaging app Line has added low-cost calls to fixed and mobile numbers to its service. The new Line Call service initially will be available for the iPhone and Android versions of the app from March in six countries - Japan, the US, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and the Philippines. The Line app already supports free calls between Line users; the new service will extend this to all phone numbers.

Customers will need to register an active mobile number in order to access Line Call. They can buy prepaid credit to make calls or purchase a 30-day plan with call credit. Prepaid calls will cost JPY 3 per minute to landlines in Japan and JPY 14 to mobile numbers. International calls from Japan start at JPY 2 per minute to countries such as China and the US. The 30-day plan will offer cheaper calls, at JPY 2 to landlines and JPY 6.5 to mobiles for up to 60 minutes per call.

It will also have a special offer of free calls to businesses with a Line account. The latter is a new service for businesses to set up a Line account for targeted marketing. Line is also expanding its stickers service, with the new Creators Market that allows anyone to post their own sticker for sale on the Line Store. Creators can sell sets of 40 stickers at JPY 100 per set once the graphics are approved by Line, and they will receive 50 percent of the sale proceeds.

The new services were unveiled at Line's Showcase event in Tokyo. Line counts over 370 million registered users worldwide.
