Maroc Telecom to lose ADSL monopoly
Moroccan telecom regulator ANRT has published a decision that will open up the ADSL market, for which Maroc Telecom's has a monopoly at present. The operator still disagrees with three measures, providing colocation of third-party operators' equipment in its existing cabinets, installing multi-operator cabinets for part of their future nodes and establishing an active wholesale offer for third-party operators under a virtual unbundled local access model. The ANRT has given Maroc Telecom until 1 August to make a wholesale offer to alternative opertors Meditel and Inwi, and to provide a technical and tariff wholesale offer for passive access to its fixed local loop. Inwi could launch its ADSL service at the end of the year, but Inwi has yet to announce its intention to join the ADSL market, according to local press reports.

Maroc Telecom already missed its original deadline of 15 October and this new notice was sent after the regulator declared the incumbent operator as having dominant market power in every category.

Inwi launches ADSL service

Moroccan mobile operator Inwi has launched its first broadband internet service, called I-Dar ADSL. It is bundled into a double-play package offering up to 20 Mbps download speeds, unlimited calls to fixed numbers and 2 hours of calls to mobile numbers for MAD 249 a month. The service comes with a free Wi-Fi router and requires a one-year contract. It is available in Casablanca and Rabat.

Meditel has launched ADSL services, profiting from the introduction of unbundling on Maroc Telecom's network. ANRT publishes decision on Maroc Telecom local loop

Moroccan telecom regulator ANRT has published a decision outlining the technical conditions and prices for Maroc Telecom to unbundle its copper local loop and passive fibre infrastructure this year. The regulator states that the operator's reference offer must include all of its demands for amendments and improvements made last year. Moroccan telecom regulator ANRT has ordered Maroc Telecom to publish a reference offer for access to its fixed infrastructure by the end of the year. The operator must include all of the amendments requested by the regulator, which rejected its initial proposals as being insufficient. Rival operators Inwi and Meditel previously said they would not take part in a future LTE auction unless they were able to share Maroc Telecom's fixed infrastructure.

Inwi tests ADSL service with some customers - report

Moroccan operator Inwi has started testing its ADSL service with some of its customers ahead of the resolution of a dispute with Maroc Telecom over wholesale access to the local loop, according to local press reports. Inwi is said to be offering free service for a year, with no obligation to subscribe to a pay service afterwards. The testers will benefit from speeds between 10 and 20 Mbps.

Maroc Telecom Group reported improved results for the second quarter, thanks to continued growth at its international activities and an economic recovery in its home market Morocco. Moroccan telecom traffic grows, prices fall in 2013

Morocco saw a rise in telecom users and traffic along with a continuing fall in prices in 2013, according to telecom regulator ANRT. The mobile average revenue per minute fell by 23 percent to MAD 0.41 at the end of December from MAD 0.53 a year earlier. Fixed ARPM decreased by 13 percent over the same period, to MAD 0.69 from MAD 0.79. International internet bandwidth grew by 54.89 percent to 412 Gbps at end 2013 from 266 Gbps at the end of 2012.
