Netflix confirms price hike for new customers
Netflix has confirmed an increase in prices for new customers in Europe and the US. The company signaled at its last earnings report that it would raise prices in order to offset growing costs of content. 

New customers in the UK will pay an additional GBP 1 per month for the streaming service, for a total GBP 6.99, and new customers in the euro zone now pay EUR 8.99 per month. In Sweden, the price also goes up, from SEK 79 to SEK 89 per month. In the US, customers will now pay USD 8.99 for the standard plan, up by one dollar per month. Netflix also offers a new USD 7.99 plan, with SD-quality viewing only on just one screen at a time. 

Existing customers will not be affected by the price increases and keep the same price for at least two years, the company said in a letter to clients.

UK second-largest Netflix market with 4.45 mln subscribers

The UK is Netflix's largest market after the US and one of its fastest-growing territories, according to estimates from Digital TV Research. Netflix expands April ISP Index data to include Canada

Netflix has expanded its April data in its ISP Speed Index to include Canada. During the month of April, Bell Canada-Fibre Optic ranked as the top cable company in Netflix's ISP Speed Index with average Netflix streaming speeds of 3.19 Mbps. Bell Canada-Fibre Optic was followed by Bell Aliant-Fibre Optic with 3.10 Mbps, Shaw with 3.00 Mbps and Videotron with 2.82 Mbps. Netflix publishes Nordic ISP speed rankings for April

Netflix has published its Nordic ISP speed rankings for April 2014. Most providers improved their average speeds, even where positions in the rankings did not rise. Telkom scraps VoD tender, plans to revise contract

South African fixed line operator has withdrawn an invitation to tender for a contract to provide video-on-demand (VoD) services to its customers, TechCentral reported. Netflix increases price of subscriptions in Brazil

Netflix has adjusted prices for subscribers in Brazil, reports Valor Economico. Brazilian subscribers to the basic plan - which allows two people to watch simultaneously on different devices - will pay BRL 19.90/month, or BRL 3 more than previously charged. For the plan with four simultaneous accesses, the price increases by BRL 1, to BRL 26.90/month. For those who are already subscribers, prices will not change until June 2015.

Netflix now offering Ultra HD 4K video streaming

Netflix has announced it is now offering Ultra HD 4K video streaming quality. Netflix in Ultra HD 4K is currently available on the Samsung UH8550 and UH9000 TVs with support from additional TVs including from Samsung, Sony, LG and Vizio coming soon. Netflix strikes interconnect deal with Verizon

Netflix announced an agreement with Verizon to improve delivery of its streaming video service to Verizon broadband customers. The company said it had an interconnect arrangement with Verizon that should improve performance for customers in the coming months. No further details were disclosed. The agreement follows a similar arrangement Netflix reached with Comcast in February. Netflix is expected to pay the ISPs for improved access to bandwidth for its customers.

Netflix enters cable STB deal with three US companies

Atlantic Broadband, Grande Communications and RCN have announced partnerships with Netflix to enable their customers to find and watch shows and movies from Netflix through the same set-top box they use to watch live TV.
