Netflix confirms European expansion later this year
US streaming video service Netflix announced plans to launch in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg later this year. The service will allow customers to watch a selection of Hollywood, local and global TV series and films, commercial-free, on TVs, tablets, phones, game consoles and computers. 

People interested in becoming Netflix members in these countries can sign up at Netflix.com to receive an e-mail alert when the service has launched. Further details, including pricing, programming and supported devices will be available at a later date. Netflix adds that it now has over 48 million customers in more than 40 countries. 

According to a report in Le Figaro, Netflix plans to launch in France in mid-September. It will charge less than EUR 10 per month for its streaming service. Netflix's expansion announcement comes amid separate reports that the US-based company plans to move its European headquarters from Luxembourg to the Netherlands. In addition to the Netherlands, the company is active in Europe in the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.
