Samsung ships over 6.7 mln Galaxy 5G devices in 2019, to launch 5G tab in Q1

Samsung shipped over 6.7 million Galaxy 5G devices last year. The company said that at November 2019, it accounted for over half (53.9%) of the global 5G smartphone market. 

The company has five Galaxy 5G devices out globally, including the Galaxy S10 G5, the Note10 5G and Note10+ 5G, the recently launched Galaxy A90 5G and the Galaxy Fold 5G. 

Samsung will be adding the Galaxy Tab S6 5G to its portfolio in the first quarter, with the device launching first in Korea. The tab is geared at business users, with ultra-fast speeds and high quality video conferencing, but also at people who want to watch content or play online games.

Taemoon Roh will head Samsung's smartphone division, succeeding Koh Dong-Jin from 20 January, Bloomberg reported. Koh will remain head of the company's IT and mobile communications division. Roh has been at Samsung for 20 years and will now lead the division as it looks to take the lead in 5G and foldables this year. The company is set to to unveil its second foldable device on 11 February, that folds down into a square, and a new flagship phone.

Huawei claims lead over Samsung in 5G smartphone shipments

Huawei announced that it shipped 6.9 million 5G smartphones as of December 2019. That puts the company just ahead of Samsung, which had reported 6.7 million 5G phones shipped last year.

SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus to jointly provide 5G services on subways

South Korean operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have teamed up to provide 5G services on subways in major cities. The three operators said they have recently completed the deployment of 5G infrastructure on the subway system in Gwangju, 330 kilometers southwest of Seoul, writes Yonhap news agency. The three mobile operators plan to install 5G networks for subways and metro stations in major cities, including Daegu, Daejeon and Busan, in the first quarter of this year.

Samsung has taken the lead in the 5G smartphone market already, accounting for three-quarters of worldwide shipments in the third quarter, according to IHS Markit.
