Telefonica has reached the milestone of 1 million active fibre customers in Spain, having doubled the figure over the past 12 months thanks above all to the success of its Movistar Fusion convergent packages. Telefonica Espana CEO Luis Gilperez Miguel made the announcement during his intervention at the XXVIII telecommunications and digital economy meeting currently taking place in Santander. Gilperez said the investment levels of the five major operators in Spain had remained constant between 2009 and 2013 even though revenues had fallen some 23 percent due to the ongoing Spanish recession. Telefonica had been responsible for half of the EUR 3.2 billion invested over that period, according to Gilperez.
The three main priorities of Telefonica in the domestic market were fibre, continued 4G deployment and the expansion of its TV offering, said Gilperez, who added that the aim was to create a "virtuous circle" encompassing investment, innovation and customer value. Returning to the company's fibre plans, Gilperez confirmed that Telefonica would reach its year-end target of 10 million premises covered by its FTTH network, increasing the figure to 15 million by December 2015 and to 80 percent of all Spanish households by 2017.
