The Belgian consumer fixed market was worth EUR 683 million in the third quarter. The same as in Q2, Telenet was the biggest provider, with revenues of EUR 280 million from consumer TV, telephony and internet services. Belgacom followed with EUR 269 million. Telenet also had the most broadband connections, at over 1.47 million, while Belgacom had a total 1.27 million at the end of September.
The smaller cable operators Voo and Numericable together accounted for around 420,000 broadband connections and took 12-13 percent of the market revenues. Numericable has expressed interest in acquiring Voo, which could create a stronger third player on the Belgian market. KPN's subsidiary Base meanwhile has said it's giving up on the fixed market, as it was unable to reach the scale needed to make the services economically viable. Mobistar has started testing cable services with the first customers, but has also said that wholesale prices needed to come down further in order to expand the services.
