Telia licenses standalone OTT rights for Sweden and Finland to Discovery Networks

Telia Company has announced that it is licensing out its standalone OTT rights for Sweden and Finland to Discovery Networks. Telia had offered a commitment to license out those rights to one other market player in the two countries last November, in order to secure the commission’s approval for Telia's acquisition of the Bonnier Broadcasting companies TV4, C More and MTV.

Telia added that the European Commission has approved Discovery as licensee. The decision means that Discovery Networks will distribute TV4 Media’s linear channels (TV4, Sjuan, TV 12, TV4 Fakta, TV4 Guld, TV4 Film, Sportkanalen, C More Hockey, C More Fotboll, C More Golf, C More Sport, C More Live 1-5), as well as Finnish MTV´s linear channels (MTV3, Sub, AVA, C More Juniori, C More Max, C More Sport 1, C More Sport 2) and Telia's Liiga ice hockey league channel package on the open internet, with no need for a traditional TV subscription.

TV4 Play is already available to anyone with a handset, tablet or computer and will continue to be so in the future.

TV4 Media passes responsibility for C More to Telia in February

Telia Company's TV4 Media said that business responsibility for the C More streaming system will move in February 2021 from TV4 Media to Telia in Sweden and Finland. TV4 Media CEO Casten Almqvist said this will provide "rocket fuel" to C More, which had been the whole point of Telia acquiring it. Power and competence will be gathered within one and the same team, he said.

Com Hem, Boxer renew Discovery distribution deal, to offer Dplay from 2021

Com Hem has announced that it and its Boxer brand have renewed their distribution agreement with Discovery Networks Sweden. From the beginning of 2021, they will also provide Dplay streaming to all their television customers. Existing TV customers who sign up to Dplay through Com Hem and Boxer will be able to watch every Allsvenskan and Superettan men's football league match via their TV receiver.

Swedish Q2 streamed video reach increases 10% year on year with rise among viewers

During the second quarter of 2020, two thirds (66%) of people aged 15 to 74 watched streamed video daily, according to consultancy Mediavision. This was an increase of over 10 percent year on year or 600,000 new viewers, it said. Online viewing has increased especially among the elderly population

Telia Finland brings in C More ice hockey streaming service in September

Telia Finland said that it will introduce a new C More Hockey streaming service in September for Telia subscription customers, following Telia Company's acquisition of Bonnier assets TV4, MTV and C More at the end of last year. The Telia Liigapassi product enables viewers to watch Finnish Elite League (Liiga) ice hockey matches, as well as other programmes about the sport.

Com Hem to shut down analogue TV service on 08 September

Swedish operator Com Hem Said it it will cease providing analogue TV on 08 September. It said about 70 percent of the 1.6 million homes affected already watch digital television. Those who still watch analogue TV will need to re-tune via channel search or changing their settings.

NENT creates new role to make sports a major part of geographic expansion

Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) has announced the appointment of Peter Norrelund as EVP and head of Expansion & Sport with effect from 01 August. Norrelund will be responsible for the company's sports rights portfolio and for expanding NENT's Viaplay streaming service to specific markets where sports will play a key role. Kim Mikkelsen will continue as NENT Group SVP and Head of Sport and will report to Norreland.

Telia TV & Media Q2 sales and EBITDA fall 30% as sports cancellations hit subscription and ad income

Telia Company said that the TV & Media division set up in Q4 2019 for the operations taken over from Bonnier Broadcasting were affected in the second quarter of 2020 by Covid-19. Revenue and adjusted EBITDA both declined by about 30 percent on a like-for-like basis. Cancellations and postponements of sport events and seasons because of coronavirus hit pay-TV revenues, as Telia lowered its prices, and as advertising revenue fell.

Telia Finland suffers fall of over 4% in Q2 net sales but cost efficiencies boost EBITDA

Telia Finland reported a fall of over 4 percent in second quarter net sales as Covid-19 caused declines in television and roaming income. The operator gained mobile subscribers during the quarter but lost TV and broadband customers. Cost efficiencies enabled it to lift adjusted EBITDA by more than 4 percent.

Telia Company reported a decline of nearly 6 percent in Swedish net sales in the second quarter of 2020 as coronavirus dented mobile roaming revenue and as sports cancellations reduced pay-TV income. Equipment sales fell, too. The operator lifted subscriber numbers during the quarter.
