Verizon, Motorola unveil 5G-upgradable smartphone, Moto Z3

Verizon and Motorola announced the Moto Z3 and 5G Moto Mod are coming exclusively to Verizon. The Moto Z3 is the first 5G-upgradeable smartphone, which will let end-users tap into Verizon’s 5G network by snapping on the 5G Moto Mod. The Z3 will be available in the US exclusively through Verizon starting on 16 August at USD 20 a month for 24 months on Verizon’s device payment plan (USD 480 retail; 0 percent APR).

To make it easier to move to 5G once the network becomes available next year, Verizon said it's offering up to USD 300 off a new Moto Z3 on its device payment plan when customers switch to Verizon and trade-in their old phone. The 5G Moto Mod will be available in the US in early 2019, with pricing to be announced later, Motorola said.

The Moto Z3 features a 6-inch Full HD+ OLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio, 3,000 mAh battery, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and dual depth-sensing smart camera system with Google Lens. It runs a "pure" Android experience, cutting down on unnecessary apps and bloatware, and including the latest software with Android Oreo.

Verizon said it will be first to launch 5G residential broadband service in four markets in the US, including Houston, Los Angeles, Sacramento and one additional city, to be named in the second half, followed by a mobile 5G platform in 2019. The Moto Z3 with 5G mod will take full advantage of Verizon’s mobile 5G service over millimeter wave spectrum for massive bandwidth, ultra-high speeds and single-digit millisecond latency, the company said.
