Vivendi shelves plans for European VoD service - report
Vivendi has shelved plans for developing a European video-on-demand service to rival Netflix, reports Liberation. The company had hoped to build on its existing assets such as Canalplay in France and Watchever in Germany as well as the planned cooperation with Mediaset in Italy to build a new platform.

However, sources familiar with the matter told the paper that plans had been put on the backburner. Watchever is being shut down and Canal Plus restructured, while the talks with Mediaset are uncertain. A week ago, Dominique Delport, the president of Vivendi Contents, told staff working on the project that their weekly meetings would be suspended. The around 15 staff had been working on the project since late 2015.

While not entirely abandoned, the company prefers to focus on the launch at the end of September of Studio+, a new offer of premium series for mobile devices, the report said. Vivendi said it still had a team working on the project, which is scheduled to launch in spring 2017.

A source close to Vivendi chairman Vincent Bollore said the project was only slowed due to the pending negotiations with Mediaset.
