Vodacom to test 5G in South Africa with Nokia

Nokia and Vodacom have signed an MoU under which the companies will trial Nokia 5G to accelerate its launch in South Africa. Nokia has a 5G portfolio that it claims will allow operators to gain an early-to-market advantage in the delivery of ultra-fast mobile broadband services at multi-Gigabit speeds and low latency. Working with Vodacom in workshops and trials, Nokia will share 5G innovations including massive MIMO Adaptive Antennas, AirScale Radio Access, AirGile Cloud-native Core, Multi-Access Edge Computing, and Mobile Anyhaul transport networks.

Initially, the companies will focus on the delivery of Ultra-HD and virtual reality video services. Vodacom and Nokia will also collaborate on applying 5G in vertical industries important to South Africa, including manufacturing, mining, medicine, media, energy and transportation. Nokia will use expertise from its Bell Labs Consulting arm to work with Vodacom on 5G.

Vodacom Group revenue rises 4.5% to ZAR 42 bln in H1

Vodacom Group has reported a 4.5 percent increase in revenue to ZAR 42.0 billion in the first half-year ending 30 September compared with ZAR 40.15 billion in the same period in 2016. The group added 4.3 million customers during the first half, 2.9 million in South Africa and 1.4 million in its international operations, to reach just over 71 million customers, up 11.8 percent. Group EBIT decreased 0.2 percent, and the EBIT margin decreased by 1.2 percentage points to 25.8 percent.

Telia says Boliden 5G connected mining project moves to next stage

Telia Sweden said that it is continuing with the Pilot for Industrial Mobile Communication in Mining (PIMM) alongside Atlas Copco, ABB, Boliden, Ericsson, InfoVista, Volvo Construction Equipment, Wolfit, RISE and Lulea Technical University (LTU). The pilot has succeeded in using mobile communications to automate and control some operations at Boliden's mine remotely. Vodacom pilots fixed LTE-A service, holds roaming talks with Rain

Vodacom South Africa says its exploring opportunities in the fixed LTE-A sector, reports Mybroadband. The operator says it is currently trialling the proposition to gauge consumer interest and use before deploying fixed LTE-A services nationally, dependant on consumer interest. The company added that it is in discussions with Rain regarding a roaming agreement for LTE-A services.

MTN South Africa and Ericsson to start 5G trial in Q1

Ericsson and MTN have announced that a 5G trial will start in the first quarter of 2018. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at AfricaCom 2017 to collaborate on 5G roll-out in South Africa. MTN will trial a range of 5G use cases and applications in its Test Bed (laboratory) proof of concept in South Africa, leading to commercial deployment in the future.

Taxi strikes disrupts Vodacom South Africa customer service

Vodacom South Africa says mass strike action by taxi drivers in Gauteng is affecting its customer service lines, reports BusinessTech. The strikes have delayed customer service agents in reaching its call centre, and this has led to a backlog in call volumes. Taxi drivers in Gauteng have gone on a province-wide strike, blocking roads in Johannesburg and Tshwane.

The companies have agreed on a list of scenarios for eventual use of 5G under the project.

South Africa's telecommunications company Comsol, backed by Nedbank, the Industrial Development Corporation and Andile Ngcaba's Convergence Partners, will launch the first 5G network in South Africa in November, reports Techcentral. The company will launch a trial 5G network, with live customers, in partnership with internet service providers with a view to launching a commercial 5G network thereafter.
