Vodafone completes takeover of Unitymedia, UPC from Liberty Global

Vodafone Group has completed the acquisition of Liberty Global's cable business in Germany (Unitymedia), Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania for a total enterprise value of EUR 18.4 billion. Vodafone said the deal makes it the leading converged operator in Europe, with almost half its European service revenues now coming from fixed and converged services.

Liberty Global confirmed the transaction was completed for EUR 19.0 billion on a GAAP basis. The company received a price equal to 24x operating cash flow for 2017, the last full year before the sale agreement was first announced. The net cash proceeds from the sale will amount to EUR 10.1 billion.

Deutsche Telekom, Tele Columbus and NetCologne have appealed before the General Court of the European Union against the takeover of Unitymedia by Vodafone, a spokesperson for the court told Medienkorrespondenz. According to the companies, the approval of the merger, which mainly affects the cable television and broadband internet markets in Germany, is unlawful because it would distort competition.

Vodafone Germany has announced that it is withdrawing the Unitymedia brand from the market. Unitymedia's shops will be redesigned with a Vodafone logo and the company will merge the product range of Unitymedia into its own.

Vodafone Germany says underlying revenues up 1.6% in Q3, led by growth in cable business

Vodafone Germany said that its revenues rose by 25.3 percent year-on-year in fiscal Q3 to EUR 2.9 billion thanks to the acquisition of Unitymedia. On an organic basis and excluding regulatory effects, service revenue was up 1.6 percent, including 0.4 percent growth in mobile and a 3.1 percent increase in fixed.

Vodafone Germany grows service revenues in H1, doubles cable customers after Unitymedia acquisition

Vodafone Germany said its service revenues increased by 8.4 percent to EUR 4.96 billion in its fiscal first half to September, supported by the acquisition of Unitymedia from August. Service revenues were up 0.1 percent on an organic basis, while EBITDA grew 3.5 percent on a pro forma basis to EUR 2.35 billion in H1.

Vodafone returns to service revenue growth in Q2, raises FY EBITDA forecast

Vodafone Group reported a small rise of 0.4 percent in revenues for its fiscal first half to September to EUR 21.94 billion, helped by its takeover of activities from Liberty Global from August. Adjusted EBITDA was up 2.7 percent to EUR 7.11 billion, while the net result was a loss of EUR 1.89 billion due to one-time charges in India.

Liberty Global results fall in Q3 as west Europe operations lose customers

Liberty Global reported a fall in revenues and operating cash flow from continuing operations in the third quarter, due mainly to continued weakness in Switzerland. Revenues fell 0.6 percent on an organic basis to USD 2.84 billion, also hurt by lower sales at Telenet in Belgium, and OCF excluding forex effects declined 4.1 percent to USD 1.21 billion.

Vodafone to eliminate 15% of its 7,700 stores in Europe

Vodafone wants to eliminate 15 percent of its 7,700 European stores, Reuters reported, citing chief executive Nick Read. Store opening will continue however in the UK. But for Europe in general, Read noted that people are just buying more online and that those who do go to shops have different expectations. As a result, the company will upgrade some of its remaining shops. Data will be used to see what customers want in each location. About 40 percent should be transformed by the end of 2021.
