Vodafone Germany starts VoLTE, to show 5G progress at CeBIT

Vodafone Germany launched its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services as the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover was about to open. It is the first operator in the country to bring out this service. The service should initiate the call within two seconds and provide clear sound quality calls. Vodafone's 4G network now covers 40 percent of the country. The VoLTE system takes up less space at base stations and requires less cooling and as much as 30 percent less power.

Also at CeBIT, Vodafone and its academic chair for mobile communications systems will provide information about 5G developments. It is hoped that 5G will provide internet service at up to 10 Gbps eventually. The target speed for 2020 is 1 Gbps. By 2030, it should provide services at around 1,000 times faster than today's LTE. Vodafone claims that it will then be possible to download the entire content of YouTube, around 45 Terabytes of data, within one hour at such speeds. Chairman of Vodafone Germany's board of directors, Jens Schulte-Bockum, said the new technology will provide impetus to the digital transformation of industry and society.
