Vodafone launches TV service in New Zealand
Vodafone has launched the Vodafone TV service in New Zealand. Customers who take up the operator’s offering will have access to Sky TV, free-to-air and a range of online and app-based entertainment services such as Netflix in one intuitive system. Vodafone TV enables viewers to switch between their smartphone, tablet and TV set. With some of the content, viewers will be able to stop what they are watching on TV, pick it up on their smartphone, and continue watching after they have left the house.

Vodafone TV delivers cloud-based 4K television to New Zealand customers over fibre and Vodafone’s FibreX network. It features catch-up functionality that is delivered direct from the cloud so customers can watch shows they have missed over the last three days, even if they have not set up a recording. Customers who sign up to a Vodafone TV package – which will bundle together unlimited broadband and Sky Basic – will have the option to add on premium content choices such as Sky Sport, SoHo and Sky Movies, without a satellite dish.

In addition to unlimited broadband and Sky Basic, the Vodafone TV packages will include all free-to-air channels such as TVNZ 1 and TVNZ 2, THREE, Bravo, Maori Television and Television 33 – premium subscription applications like Netflix, as well as access to TVNZ OnDemand, ThreeNow, YouTube, iHeartRadio and Love Nature 4K. Vodafone plans to soon announce full plan and pricing details for the Vodafone TV service.

Vodafone has confirmed it is considering floating its New Zealand business in 2018, Stuff.co.nz reports, citing Vodafone New Zealand spokeswoman Elissa Downey. The company intends "to explore a potential IPO of Vodafone New Zealand during the 2018 calendar year", Downey said. No final decision had been made, she added.

Vodafone, Sky NZ abandon merger plans

Vodafone New Zealand and Sky Network Television have decided to abandon their planned merger. The companies first announced the plans over a year ago, but were unable to secure regulatory clearance for the deal due to fears of reduced competition from merging the broadband and pay-TV providers. Sky said in a short statement that the companies decided to withdraw their appeal against the Commerce Commission's decision. Vodafone and Sky will continue to see out opportunities for commercial partnership.

Vodafone New Zealand announced that the new Vodafone-powered All Blacks app was enriched with the Stadium Live feature. The new option enables end-users to watch rugby matches on their smartphones. Sky worked closely with Vodafone and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) to provide their multiple camera feeds direct to the hands of fans in the stand. The Commerce Commission has declined to grant clearance for the proposed merger of Sky Network Television and Vodafone New Zealand. The Commission says its assessment focused on the impact of the proposed merger on competition in both the broadband and mobile telecommunications markets. To grant clearance, the Commission says it would need to be satisfied that the proposed merger would not be likely to substantially lessen competition in any market in New Zealand.
