Amazon attracts 17 mln viewers for live NFL matches on Prime

Amazon announced that its live broadcasts of ten NFL matches in the past season on its Prime Video service attracted a cumulative 17 million viewers worldwide. Overall, Prime Video had its biggest streaming day on 30 December, the company announced, without providing further numbers.

Amazon is thought to have paid USD 50 million for the NFL rights, its first major purchase of live content for Prime Video. The company said its own original production, autos show 'The Grand Tour', was the most-watched programme on 30 December, as well as the most-watched original production in the past year. Its series 'Sneaky Pete' was also popular, and the Amazon-backed film 'Manchester by Sea'.

In other select figures released by the company about its Prime service, over 5 billion items were shipped worldwide by Prime in 2017. Free delivery for Amazon purchases is the main perk of the Prime subscription, along with free access to the video and music streaming services.

Amazon's Fire TV Stick and Echo Dot were the most purchased items by Prime members last year, across all sellers on Amazon. Amazon said it sold "millions" of its own devices in 2017, which help Prime members get more from their subscriptions by accessing digital content.
