Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has approved the terms of the 5G spectrum auction, following changes requested by the Court of Auditors. The auction begins with the receipt of documentation from interested parties by 27 October, and the first session for opening and judging the bids will be held on 4 November. Frequencies in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GH, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands will be offered during the auction.
The auction regulation establishes commitments for national and regional coverage and backhaul investments regarding underserved or unserved areas. The 5G service must be launched by the auction winners in all Brazilian state capitals and in the Federal District by 31 July 2022.
The regulation also earmarks resources for the for the implementation of fibre transport networks in the North Region (PAIS) and the construction of a private communication network for the Federal Public Administration, to support government services. Proceeds from the licences in the 26 GHz band will be reserved for connectivity projects at public schools.
