China Unicom joins ONOS project for SDN development

At the 2015 China SDN/NFV Conference held in Beijing on 22 April, China Unicom and Open Network Operating System (ONOS) organization agreed to cooperate on the ONOS project to promote SDN industry development. China Unicom is currently in a business transformation phase. The operator believes SDN represents a huge opportunity for it to achieve network transformation and service innovation. ONOS will actively cooperate with China Unicom and play a key role in researching and applying SDN/NFV-based next-generation network technologies.

Up to now, ONOS has established partnerships with operators (AT&T, NTT, and SKT), telecom vendors (Huawei, Ciena, Ericsson, and Cisco), network operators (Internet2, CNIT, and CREATE-NET), and other collaborators (SRI and Infoblox), and is supported by ONF, ONS, and ONRC.

China Unicom H1 profits up on lower costs, broadband growth

China Unicom reported revenues for the first half of 2015 down 3.3 percent from a year earlier to CNY 144.69 billion. Services revenue fell 5.3 percent, with mobile revenues down 9.7 percent to CNY 73.46 billion and fixed revenues up 2.2 percent to CNY 46.19 billion. Unicom blamed the drop on the changes to VAT in China and changes to its sales and marketing model. The latter resulted in reduced handset subsidies and operating costs, helping EBITDA for the period increase 5.8 percent to CNY 50.46 billion. N

Internet2 research network pilots ONOS

The Open source SDN Networking Operating System (ONOS) community and the Internet2 NOC at Indiana University have actively deployed ONOS on Internet2's nationwide research and education network. Five higher education institutions, Duke University, Florida International University, Indiana GigaPoP, MAX and the University of Maryland, and the University of Utah, are connected to a virtual slice of the Internet2 network, which is piloting the technology.

Verizon has implemented a software decline network architecture, laying the groundwork for new services and applications, together with technology partners Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Juniper Networks and Nokia Networks.
